Dedication of our Boys

This morning at church we had both of our boys dedicated! It was a very special morning...a morning for us to commit to raising our boys in a Godly home! I took the biggest challenge in raising my boys in a way that they see Jesus in me! Wow...is that my prayer and hope! And, the church as a whole committed to raising our boys with us...how awesome is that to have them surrounded by so many wonderful believers! Awesome!

Our wonderful Pastor Chuck did an awesome job praying for our boys and encouraging us as their parents. He was so kind in mentioning Kate...he even had her picture on the big screen. Pastor was on his way to Michigan to dedicate Kate when she passed away...so we had a little dedication ceremony in our living room later that day when we got home. It meant so much to us...she is and always will be part of our family...and were so glad to have her memory included today.

Grandma & Ted and Nana & Oompa came and were part of the dedicationSeth wasn't quite sure about the whole thing....he can be so shy!Grant...well, he just hammed it up for the whole congregation.

As part of the dedication...we were to pick a verse...a life verse for our boys. Andy read them aloud this morning.

Seth: Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."

Grant: 2 Peter 1: 5-8 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ

Thanksgiving Weekend

Wow...can it be over already? What a great weekend...I still can't believe Thanksgiving is over and we're on the way to Christmas.
We had a wonderful day on Thanksgiving. We celebrated at my parent's house with the Vollmers...friends with whom we have been celebrating Thanksgiving with for 30 years now. It truly is like family. My brother's family was there...my brother's wife's parents...plus Art & 'Reen and their daughter Laura and her husband Scott (plus their 1/2 cooked little peanut who will arrive in April). It was a full table...so the kids got to eat at the first official kid table. And believe it or not...Seth ate and behaved better than he ever has at Thanksgiving....go figure!
We feasted on awesome turkeys....yep 2!

Art is carving the oven roasted and my dad is carving the deep fried one in front! YUM YUM!

Grant: "if they won't feed me any of that turkey they keep talking about...I guess I'll just eat the highchair!" Next year buddy.....you can feast and feast and feast!

The rest of the day was filled with parade watching, game playing, baby spoiling and even 2 runnings of Kate's Kart (We remember those long lonely holidays spent in the hospital, so we make an effort to go even on holidays).

Friday the whole family slept till 10! How awesome is that with a baby and a preschooler! Just heavenly! Then...more running of Kate's Kart...leftovers at Nana & Oompas....playing Wii...a few odd jobs around the house and top it off with a movie and fire.

Saturday....mission: decorate! You always forget how long it takes...but it's done (minus the trees)

Sunday....a very special morning at church (see next post), plus the Colts game and Andy & I even got in some shopping while Grandma & Ted stayed with the boys! Throw in another running of Kate's Kart at yet another hospital and the Hallmark movie...and it's one full but relaxing weekend.

We truly are blessed and have much to be thankful for!

And the holiday season begins...

Seth, Andy & I went downtown for our annual lighting of the Santa display. We debated about taking Grant....but when Nana, Oompa, Art & Maureen volunteered to keep him...we chose to leave him at home. Grant wouldn't know what was going on...plus it gave us a lot more freedom to see everything...and not have to stop to feed him. We missed him...but look forward to taking him next year...when he's a little bigger!

(the nice man who offered to take our pic cut off the top of the wreath...oh well)

waiting for the big countdown

It was a decent night....not too cold. It did spit rain for a little bit...but overall, we had a fun night.
We...
--ate yummy fish & chips at Red Robin
--watched several displays get lit for the first time
--enjoyed some hot cider & popcorn
--listened to the Youth Symphony play a holiday concert
--had a visit with Santa
It's hard to believe it's the holiday season already...and I'm sure the next month will just fly by.
I'd go to bed to get ready for a fun day of parade watching, card playing and turkey eating...but the little guy is WIDE awake....Art & Reen....what did you feed him...it's all your fault!

21 Weeks

At 21 weeks, Grant...

--had his first ever fever...about 100 degrees for a couple hours. Fortunately, has had no other symptoms or signs of anything else
--met the ever popular Art & 'Reen for the first time. (Art & Maureen live in NC and are in town for our annual Thanksgiving Celebration. They are an amazing couple who we love and miss! Remember...they are the ones who came and stayed w/ Seth multiple times when Kate was in the hospital)
--is beginning to make consonant sounds....especially "ya"
--continues to find his voice....talks and jabbers all the time
--now loves storytime....he grabs at the pages or hits the pages with his cute little fists
--is back to sleeping through the night...thanks to those 2 teeth being all the way through now
--is totally aware of his environment...grabs at anything...watches everyone
--went on his first carriage ride and saw his first parade at Grandmas
--consistently finds both feet...especially when getting his diaper changed

--really is a good good baby....we couldn't have asked for a baby sweeter and more content

Rub A Dub Dub...2 boys in a tub!

I love it...both my boys in the bathtub together. I am so proud of Seth...with Grant's tub in the big tub, it barely leaves any room for Seth...but Seth still wants to have bathtime together! Grant just watches him...I love it! Doesn't get much better than bathtime with the kids!

I'd post a video of Grant kicking like a wild man...but he kicks his privacy washcloth off within seconds...maybe next time I'll put him in the tub in his swimsuit!
But...isn't this so cute! Can you guess the song? Not bad for his first night!

On The Mend

It's been a LONG week here in the Layman house...we've all been hit with something...

Andy...he got hit the worst. We're thinking it was that H1N1 thing as he had all the symptoms...which meant he was home all week. Today, almost 10 days later, he said he is finally feeling pretty good!

Seth...he was next in line. Not quite sure, he had a long-grade fever off and on Friday & Saturday and just felt "yucky". He didn't eat much...but is back to normal now, except for a lingering cough.
He was super tired on Friday...this is how I found him...sound asleep...in the middle of the afternoon!

Me...I too had a low-grade fever on Friday morning...but it soon went away and left me with a pretty bad head cold & cough, which appears to be lingering...and lingering...and lingering.

(Seth and I did get our H1N1 shots on Thursday, so I am thinking we both just had a reaction to the shot...I hope!)

And as far as Mr. Grant....I was thinking he was going to sail through all of this healthy as a horse. Sunday night...he too got a lowgrade fever (no other symptoms)..it lasted all of a couple hours and was gone...and he was GOOD TO GO! Way to go Mr. Grant!

Knock on wood that it is all over and we will all be healthy for the weekend.
We did all muster up all of our strength to head down to Grandma's on Saturday for our annual Thanksgiving celebration with her. She cooked ALL the yummy fixins and we enjoyed a super lunch before heading out downtown for carriage rides. Back to the house for some rest before going to the annual Parade Of Lights Parade. It was a fun day...although it wore Andy & Seth completely out!

20 Weeks

At 20 Weeks Grant...

--has 2 teeth! Yep...that other bottom one poked through this week. I am hoping that is why he has been up 4-5 times a night. Usually, giving him his paci and turning on his mobile, and he is back out.

--definitely has the hang of rolling. Anytime you put him on his back, he rolls over...and then gets pretty upset when he can't get back over on his back

--is getting stronger at holding his head up..but still doesn't push up w/ his hands

--has outgrown his bouncy seat--he pulls himself up and plops over! Can't believe I'm putting baby stuff away already

--has found his toes

--loves playing with small hand toys
--went to the downtown library...2 times!
--sat in a highchair for the first time at Nana & Oompa's while at a cookout
--misses his daddy, since daddy has been quarantined w/ the flu
--adores his big brother...and big brother is finally starting to adore him! Seth had become a great helper.

Thanksgiving Feast

Yesterday was Seth's Thanksgiving Feast at school. The classes sing a couple songs and then we all go into the gym and "FEAST" on pumpkin muffins, vegetable soup and hand-churned butter, which the kid all worked together making. It was special this year in that daddy actually got to go (it's during the school day). Grant stayed home with our neighbor...so it was a nice morning with just our Seth. .

He's come a long way in 3 years...remember this post? It was his first public singing 3 years ago...I dont' think he even blinked his eyes. At least this year he is at least mouthing the words.

19 Weeks

Wednesday, November 11
19 Weeks
At 19 weeks Grant...

--HAS A TOOTH! I was totally freaked out yesterday when I found it...I was totally NOT expecting it...he has shown no signs of teething (besides drooling & chewing which he has been doing for months now). We were just at the doc...he said most kids get them at the same age as their siblings...both Seth & Kate were at 6 months. Plus the doc didn't tell me one was on the verge of popping through! Grant certainly hasn't been grumpy. I know my photo skills are rough...but you CAN see it...looking at his mouth, it's the lower right...you can see a tiny white line!

--is busted out of all 3-6 month clothes and 6-9 month onesies are getting tight!
--can roll over...but gets mad once he is over
--still has 0 interest in pushing up while on his tummy
--has this new habit of grabbing onto a ring on his carseat...and won't let go!

--adores his big brother...watches him like a hawk Grant will instantly stop crying when Seth is around. Plus...during bedtime stories...Grant watches Seth, not the book

--can sit with very minimal support...it won't be long (the top picture...I am just balancing him while holding onto his hand)

--is my little STUD MUFFIN!

How I spent my Saturday

Yep...that's almost 36 dozen (individually wrapped) cookies. And...I still have 18 more dozen to go! Obviously, I have a HUGE order due for my basket/gift business. The day has gone pretty well..considering I was caring for an infant too! I can't even count how many times I washed my hands today!

Andy and Seth went to Grandmas to cut wood and work in the yard. Seth stayed over night...and Andy was a huge help w/ Grant tonight!

My back hurts...gonna grab a shower, hit the sack and surely dream of butter & eggs!

18 Weeks

Wednesday, November 4
18 weeks...just over 4 months

--had his 4 month check-up: weighed in at 16 lbs (75%) & 27 3/4 in (above 95%) We've got a LONG boy! He grew 2.5 pounds & 1.5 inches in the past 2 months!
--got a GREAT, healthy report from the doctor
--got 2 shots & a oral vaccinne...which meant for a grumpy baby who only wanted to be held today
--is finding his voice....or screams at us whenever he isn't getting enough attention

--went trick or treating twice...wore him out and he slept through most of both of them

--spent another day at a campground..trick or treating at Chain O Lakes
--played with his cousin, Nia (no crying and frowns this time)

--is getting stronger everyday...especially in the sitting position
--ADORES his big brother...watches EVERY move he makes
--found my face...loves to grab at it
--still has no consistent napping schedule
--has found just his fingers...and sucks on those often

Halloween...State Park Style

What a fun day we had on Saturday.

My parents and several of their friends went camping at Chain O' Lakes State Park over the weekend. Seth was going to go up on Friday...but since it was cold and rained ALL DAY...he stayed home and all 4 of us went up on Saturday. My brother and his family were REALLY brave and set up tents on Saturday. So...the my whole family was up there.

It was a whole Halloween FESTIVAL up there... all kinds of festivities...hay rides, pumpkin decorating, costume parades and contests, ghost walks...AND...trick or treating. It was so fun...walking through all the campsites...trick or treating. It was such a fun atmosphere...and many of the sites went all out and decorated to the hilt. It was only an hour...but since the sites are so close...Seth came home with more candy than ever!

We were quite impressed and with all my parent's friends, their grandkids, plus the cousins...Seth had plenty of friends to play with. Plus...some friends brought pumpkins and we carved pumpkins on site. Andy, Grant and I chickened out and came home Saturday evening, since there wasn't room in the camper for all the kids plus us (and we were too much of whimps to tent it) Seth got to stay and continued to have a wonderful time.

It was a fun way to spend a chilly, but sunny Halloween. Can't wait for next year!
