Vacation 2015: Day 2 UP/Shipwreck/Falls

Friday, July 17

Luckily, I woke up feeling MUCH better!  After a quick breakfast, we packed up and headed over to the view of Lake Huron at the lake.  It was back in a little bay and wasn't the "best beach," but Seth was excited to get his foot wet in Lake Huron!

We then crossed over the Mackinac Bridge and headed up to Paradise, Michigan in the UP.  The town was pretty run down with lots of closed businesses.   We did find 1 of 2 places to eat:  The Berry Patch.  Andy had a UP famous Passtee (kind of a  pot pie w/ gravy) while the boy  and I had some sandwiches.  Since it was my birthday...we all had a piece of pie to celebrate!

We then headed about 15 minutes north to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Bay.    We learned a lot about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and saw the recovered bell.   There were a few other buildings to explore.  We tried going on a hike and to the beach...but the mosquitos were unbearable...even with some spray.   It made us really nervous about how bad the mosquitos could be on the rest of the trip.

We headed over to Tahquamenon Falls State Park.  We checked into our campsite...but decided to drive up to the Upper Falls before going to our site.  We took the short hike to the falls...very pretty! We explored all the paths and all the different views of the falls, including lots of steps down and up!

There was  nice restaurant at the falls, and since it was my birthday...we chose to eat out instead of making tacos at the campsite!   Andy had yummy whitefish and I had shrimp scampi...along with some of the best blue cheese dressing ever!   The waitress brought us a piece of chocolate cake for my birthday and had the entire restaurant sing to me!

We found our site, got all set up and took a bike ride around the campground. The campground was nearly full with lot of tents.   I got my birthday present which was saddle bags for my bike!      By this time it was late and we were all ready for some bed!   Mosquitos were actually bearable..but the boys still had fun zapping them with the bug zappers.
